I want a website! Where do I start?

First, get your domain name. Just go through our easy registration process. Next, choose a hosting plan that suits you. We’ll have your hosting account set up within 24 hours then you will receive an email with instructions on how to manage your hosting account.
Your hosting account buys space for your files on one of our secure servers, which makes your site accessible to the internet. You also get five email accounts (or more, depending on your hosting plan.)
To build your site, you access it by uploading files with an FTP (file transfer protocol) program. You can use any FTP program you already have, or you can use a free utility such as Fetch. Internet convention is that the first file you’ll need to upload is the index.html, which is the web page that loads when you access www.yourdomain.com
You may only want to use your customized email accounts and not set up a site. That’s fine too. See the Flash movies above on how to set up your email accounts.

How do I get my own dot.com so I never have to change my email address again?

This is a great way to keep your email address forever, and stop advertising for Hotmail or MSN! First get your own domain name, then choose a hosting plan that meets your needs. Our hosting plans come with five or ten different email addresses — you can add more for an additional fee. We’ll have you set up within 24 hours and you’ll get an email explaining how to access your Cpanel. You can then set up your new email accounts to forward to your ISP (internet service provider). As a result, you can change ISPs whenever you need to, and your clients and contacts will never know anything has changed. No more scratched out email addresses on your business cards!

Can I register a new domain at Go Design, and what does it cost?

Go Design is a licensed reseller of domain names and we purchase in bulk so we can offer you reasonably priced domain names. Just go to our registration page, find a domain name you like with our search engine, and register it for $20/year*
*URLs ending with .us are $30/year.

How hard is it to transfer my existing domain over to Go Design?

Moving a website or domain name is simple. Go ahead and submit an order for a hosting account with Go Design. Your current Domain Name Registrar tracks who the Web hosting provider is for your web site. When you change hosting companies, your Domain Name Registrar must be told how to redirect traffic to your new location with us. There are many Domain Name Registrars and they have different procedures. Basically you will have to contact your Domain Name Registrar and request a technical contact change. Please contact us and we will provide you the information you will need to give the Domain Name Registrar.

What kind of domains can I have?

We host all types of domains, including .COM, .NET, .ORG, .EDU, .INFO and .BIZ.

Is the domain transfer quick and painless?

(1) Set up a hosting account with Go Design. Submit your order HERE.
(2) After your account is set up, upload your files and create your email accounts.
(3) Now you can request a domain transfer with your domain registrar. Point the domain name to our nameservers (call us for that info) and wait 24 to 48 hours until the changes have propagated.
(4) At this point your domain should be pointing to your new hosting account with Go Design and your website and emails should be up and running smoothly.
(5) It may take up to 7 business days for your new information to be fully recognized across the Internet. After that period you may cancel your hosting account with your old provider.

Will my site ever be "down"?

Hopefully not. However, there are circumstances, such as acts of God and third-party outages, that are beyond our reasonable control. We schedule server maintenance during periods of light traffic. We do promise that when a problem comes up, we will be available to you and we will respond as quickly as humanly possible.

Problems with your email?

Two things to check at your cPanel. 1) Have you exceeded the allowed number of email accounts? If so you can call us to bump up your account. 2) The server limits the number of times per hour an email account can be checked in order to protect your account from outside interference.
We strongly recommend that you set your mail schedule to check no more often than every 10 minutes.

How much bandwidth can I use?

We offer our customers an unmonitored account in terms of bandwidth. We do not pro-actively monitor bandwidth usage. Customers may use as much bandwidth as necessary as long as they do not harm other users located on the same machine and comply with all other terms & conditions.

Terminology

Bandwidth
The maximum amount of data that can travel a communications path in a given time, usually measured in seconds. If the communications path is a pipe, then bandwidth is the width of the pipe that determines how much data can flow through it at one time.

Cache
When you open a web page, the data is "cached," or temporarily stored on your computer so the next time you want that page, your web browser just accesses it from the cache which means the page loads quickly. However, if the web page is updated, you won't get the most current information. Use the Reload button on your browser to download a fresh page, or empty your cached files in your browser program.

FTP
Short for File Transfer Protocol, it's the most common method of transferring files from one computer to another. FTP is a way to connect to another Internet site to retrieve and send files. In your browser, you can use FTP by typing the URL into the location box at the top of your screen.
When you want to upload files to a remote computer, you will need an FTP client program. If you don’t have one you can download Fetch for free. To use FTP, you’ll need to know the name of the file, the computer where it resides, and the directory it's in.

Useful Terminology

Internet Service Provider ISP, or access providers
You contract with an ISP to provide you with connectivity from your computer to the internet. If you access your Internet service providers via a modem and your telephone line may be called dial-up services.

IP address or IP number
A unique numeric code that identifies a particular computer on the Internet, just as your street address identifies the location of your home. When you register your domain name (yourdomain.com), a numerical IP address is assigned to you (123.456.789.100). This is called "pointing" your Domain Name to your IP address. If you change
host servers, you’ll have to request a new IP address be assigned to your (same) Domain Name.

Streaming Media
Streaming data is multimedia files (like video and audio clips) that start playing seconds after the file is received. The media comes in a "stream" from the server so that you don't have to wait long periods of time to download whole multimedia files.

URL
Short for Uniform Resource Locator, a URL is the address for a site on the World Wide Web, for example www.yourdomain.com. Web browsers use URLs for locating files and other remote resources.
